Cleanliness without Compromise-Mawylnnong
A tribal village where everyone, from birth, learns and practices cleanliness, just as one learns how to walk
Whatever is written about Mawylnnong -a village in Meghalaya- is little. From being awarded the cleanest village in Asia in 2003 to being declared a heritage site by UNESCO, this village teaches everyone the significance of cleanliness as a matter of obeisance to the ancestors who toiled hard. Struck by cholera about 100 years ago, this village is now a shining example of how something inhabited by human beings can be maintained spic and span. A no plastic and no smoking zone, everyone is involved in the upkeep of their own huts and neighbouring areas too. The lush greenery around is the result of planting that is carried out regularly. A foodie's paradise too, the specialised local dishes and the natural habitat attract tourists.
Possibly, their passion to maintain the village in its best form may give some room for thought for the outsiders to emulate.
Truly appreciable.
